Erin Loree GRIT/SHEEN

To my humble opinion, Erin Loree is the best abstract painter in the world! I had the chance to meet her during the opening of her first solo show: GRIT/SHEEN at Project Gallery in Toronto.

As I made my way through the impressive crowd I immediately fell in love with the luminescent swirls of light, the exquisite gradients of colour and the quasi sculptural impasto of oil that characterizes Erin Loree's groundbreaking abstractions.

The uniqueness of Loree’s style can be partly explained by her technique. She initiates her creative process by brushing delicate gradient of colour on the background of each canvas/wood panel. Then, she spreads a thick layer of oil all over the support and steers it with homemade squeegees!

By this means, she is able to produce astonishingly bright swirls of paint intertwined with imposing multicoloured masses without ever compromising the harmony of her palette. Even if Loree’s pieces vary a lot in sizes (from 6”x 8” to a majestic 60” x 84”), the emotional charge transmitted by her art works remains the same. Each canvas conveys a vivid expression of energy and movement grasped in time, where radiant light seems to emerge from within.

When I went up to her to congratulate her for the show, I couldn't believe her reaction. Appreciative, humble and truly grateful of the compliments I was giving her, almost as if she didn't realize she is the best painter alive! No Warhol bullshit with this girl, no games, just pure talent.

As you all know, it is extremely rare in today's international art scene to encounter something truly new, something that you've never seen before, something that wasn't done in the 1970's and redone in the 2000's, something that we can actually call: Contemporary Art. So, when I discovered the art of Erin Loree at Project Gallery, my faith in the relevance of painting in the 21st century was brought back to life.
